Dragon*Con, Part One

Dragon*Con was a good time this year. I'll be breaking this into multiple posts. Here's part one. Sticking it behind a cut-tag for those with short attention spans.
Friday:
-- Spent the morning wandering about, people-watching, sketching out rough ideas for where I wanted to go and what I wanted to see and do during the rest of the con. The pocket program's an invaluable thing.
-- Said hi to
zengoddess, working the Info Booth. Her recent life changes are evidently agreeing with her; she looks freakin' great.
-- Went to the opening panel in the Tolkien track run by the great folks at TheOneRing.net, "Welcome to Middle-Earth", in which I dated myself by being one of three people in the room who raised their hands when asked "How many people were here for our first presentation four years ago?" Also got to meet the INFAMOUS
weetanya for the first time (consumer alert: she is even more wee in person. Heh. Just yanking your chain, Wee). I did miss seeing
corvar, Calisuri, and Quickbeam, though, all of whom have been con mainstays in previous years.
-- Wandered the dealer's room for a bit, visiting my three regular annual stops (Ruth Thompson's Tarnished Images, Nene Thomas Illustrations, and Midnight Syndicate. I get the impression I may have spent a bit too much money there over the years; all three recognized me on sight (Ruth pounced and gave me a hug upon seeing me)). Ruth has finally gotten around to doing the next two paintings in the "Arcana" series, which I've been gently pestering her about finishing for the past three years. Figures. Now I can't afford 'em. Nene also had at least twenty new pieces this year, some of which were just gorgeous. Nothing new from Midnight Syndicate yet, but Edward told me they were working on the new CD and hoped to have it out in the next couple months.
-- Hung out in the Hyatt bar with some ARTC compatriots until 7ish, when it was time to start hauling equipment for the ARTC show. Had the slowest waitress in the world. Waitress called herself "Go-Go" and was dressed in a skimpy bikini-type outfit with dollar bills stuck in her garters just in case you didn't get the idea. Nice to see the Hyatt staff pandering to the fanboys. [/sarcasm]
-- The ARTC performance of Lovecraft's The Shadow Over Innsmouth went fantastically well. We got tons of applause from a packed house. Our guest stars worked out great despite minor mishaps (Harlan Ellison showed up at the last minute because con chairman Pat Henry had told him to show up at 7:30, instead of the 7:00 that would have been a much better idea, but Michael Brady, true to form, showed up early with his script and ready to go. Great guy, he is. Both of them sounded great though Harlan had a tendency to be offmike a bit too much sometimes). For the next three days I would have people stopping me (I counted over twenty) to tell me what a great performance it had been (and, if I might be allowed a bit o' preening, some of them singled my performance out in particular).
-- Dinner with most of ARTC at Mick's downtown, where we were subjected to ear-bludgeoningly-loud crap karaoke renditions, slow service, and indifferent food...but at least it was food. I hadn't eaten all day, so it was a welcome diversion. The bill for the table was over three hundred. Yeah, the ARTC roster is a sizeable one.
-- Spent most of the rest of the evening people-watching and costume-watching from the second level balcony of the Hyatt. It was at this point that I ran into
wicked_wish and
wyldkyss for the first time. Great to meet the two of you finally.
-- Addendum to last item: both
wyldkyss and
wicked_wish are insanely hot in person, and friendly as all-get-out.
-- One regret: costume-watching from the second floor gets you a great view, but if you see a really great costume, they're usually gone by the time you can get down there to tell them you love it. I saw an absolutely PERFECT Master Chief from the Halo series of games walking around, but he was vanished when I hit the lobby level. If anybody knows who the hell he was, let me know, I want to email the fucker and express my admiration.
Part two coming in a bit.
Currently playing: Paul Oakenfold -- "Swordfish" Soundtrack. Some people think Oak's work is mostly ripping off others, but I don't care. I think "Dark Machine" from this disc is one of the best electro tunes I've ever heard.
