Looking for work, very soon.

I've just lost my job.

The small software company that I've been working for for the past seven years or so has been struck pretty hard by the bursting of the Internet dot-com bubble. We've been in the red for some time and today I was given the lovely news that I'm being let go because they can't afford to keep me anymore. I'll be working through the end of this week.

I am now in search of ANY new job. I will be able to pay rent and bills for perhaps two months before being in desperate straits, but in the meantime I would greatly appreciate it if anyone knows of any opportunities in the Atlanta area. I will do retail work, temp work, unskilled labor, whatever -- there has been no response to the resumes I've sent out in the IT area so I am going to have to take whatever I can get.

I'm also not too proud to beg. If you want to drop me a couple bucks to keep me going temporarily and you like the stuff I write, you can use Paypal to drop me a few coins. You can send to the email address direwolf (AT) speedfactory (DOT) net.

I could really use your good thoughts right now, folks.

Holy crap! That's no good. At least unemployment should help things along, no?

Anyway, yes, I'll be sending job mojo your way. MojomoJoMoJomOJoMOjOmojOmOjOMoJO

[identity profile] dslartoo.livejournal.com 2004-06-09 10:11 am (UTC)(link)
Unemployment will help but I hate relying on others and of course it's only a fraction of what I make now. Thanks for the mojo.

cheers,
Phil

I'm so sorry to hear of your troubles!

Have you visited http://www.aquent.com/ ?

They have a bunch of stuff listed all the time, temp work, permanent...

Check not just in your own area (because I see there's not anything there today-- though it changes all the time) but because a lot of the stuff you do can be done via telecommuting... I know a couple of people who have gotten work this way.

Good luck!

[identity profile] dslartoo.livejournal.com 2004-06-09 10:11 am (UTC)(link)
Haven't tried it but I will definitely give it a look starting tonight. Thanks!

cheers,
Phil

Shit, Phil. I'm very sorry about that. I will peek around here and see if I can find anything for you.

It's appreciated, man. I hope my connections turn something up, because my own hunt hasn't done me much good.

cheers,
Phil

! That bites, Phil. :( I hope you find something soon.

(but in the meantime, I hope you get a lot of reading done while you're off!)

[identity profile] dslartoo.livejournal.com 2004-06-09 10:13 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure there will be much reading and computer game playing in the bits of spare time when I'm not out pounding the pavement. :)

cheers,
Phil

Aw Phil, that SUCKS. I checked with my company - no openings in IT in the Atlanta office. However, I did find the following on the Turner Broadcasting/AOL/Time-Warner jobsite:

Sr. Oracle DBA
Jr. IT Analyst (2 of these)
Advanced Business Systems Analyst
Expert Software Developer (2 of these)

You can find the descriptions/application info under the "Turner Jobs" link at: http://www.turner.com

Good luck - I'll be keeping the digits crossed for you.

[identity profile] dslartoo.livejournal.com 2004-06-09 10:24 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the crossed digits! I'll be blizzarding various places with resumes starting tomorrow and will definitely take a look at those postings.

cheers,
Phil

Been there, done that, have the psychological scars. FWIW, Starbucks rescued me from the street, even if it wasn't that long before I needed to be rescued from Starbucks. It at least kept body and soul together...

[identity profile] dslartoo.livejournal.com 2004-06-09 10:26 am (UTC)(link)
That's what I'm looking at first: to keep body and soul together and a roof over my head. Once I have gainful employment again, I'll worry about what I'm going to do long-term.

Agh, dude, I'm really sorry... hope you can get a new job soon... my only suggestion is to try Adecco or any other good temp agency. I've always found it worthwhile.

[identity profile] parilous.livejournal.com 2004-06-09 09:13 am (UTC)(link)
I second the idea of going to temp agencies. The pay is better than regular off-the-street retail, too.

Good luck. I can't imagine what I'd do right now if I were laid off.

sucktacular. :(

[identity profile] lisabelle.livejournal.com 2004-06-09 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm really sorry to hear about this, Phil!

The Atlanta Business Chronicle a couple of weeks ago published a list of the top 50 tech firms in Atlanta -- it might be a starter list of corporate websites where you'd like to drop your resume.

http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/stories/2004/05/24/focus.html

Best of luck, and do keep us all posted.

Re: sucktacular. :(

That will be very useful indeed. Thanks, Lisa.

Appreciate the good wishes, too.

*hugs* That sucks ass. I'll keep my eyes and ears open for anything I might be able to send your way. See ya tonight.

[identity profile] dslartoo.livejournal.com 2004-06-09 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
It does indeed suck large amounts of ass (with all that entails). Thanks for the good wishes.

cheers,
Phil

I'm sorry to hear about your job loss. You'll get through it. Everything really does happen for a reason, even if the reason takes a while to reveal itself.

My thoughts are with you.

[identity profile] dslartoo.livejournal.com 2004-06-09 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
My mother, the eternal optimist, said almost exactly the same thing. I'm trying to look at this positively, but will feel much better once I'm employed again.

Phil

That sucks. I hope you got some severence?

Not sure what you do, but my company does have one job available in Atlanta: http://redhat.hrdpt.com/cgi-bin/a/highlightjob.cgi?jobid=46

Good luck, man. :)

~L

[identity profile] dslartoo.livejournal.com 2004-06-09 10:34 am (UTC)(link)
No severance. The company can't afford to pay me any more, they definitely can't afford severance pay.

I did wrangle a concession out of them that I get the two weeks of vacation pay I'm owed -- if they have the money for that.

Thanks for the job posting; unfortunately I have no experience working with Linux so I'd be useless at that one. I appreciate it anyway.

cheers,
Phil

[identity profile] sonorancynic.livejournal.com 2004-06-09 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
That's über unfortunate...I'm sure you'll be able to find something to sustain your current vices with your experience. KICK THAT JOB MARKET'S ASS!

MAKE IT YOUR BITCH!

And although I've never fantasized about moving to the Great South, if you run across anything to do with drawing/painting that pays over $24k a year, send the job offer my way. I'm still having a hell of a time finding work without going back to school for a CS degree here in AZ.

Re: Aw maaan

[identity profile] dslartoo.livejournal.com 2004-06-10 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
I'll keep an eye out for you while I hunt. Don't think I'll turn anything up, offhand, since that's so far outside my area of expertise...but I'll look anyway, for Eckie. :)

cheers,
Phil

[identity profile] seismic.livejournal.com 2004-06-09 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Gah. That bites. I'll keep everything I have crossed for you and hope that maybe this'll turn out to be a good thing.

[identity profile] dslartoo.livejournal.com 2004-06-10 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks for the crossings n' stuff. I'm also hoping that it'll all turn out right eventually.

cheers,
Phil

I'm sorry, too!

[identity profile] verdragon.livejournal.com 2004-06-09 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so sorry! Just add that on to the rest of your well wishes...

Well, if you're interested, I'm looking for a web developer and someone to create the dbs I told you about... that's about all I can offer you right now.

And I agree with the sentiment that everything happens for a reason -- and maybe the reason is this... you would have never left if they didn't kick you out first... if you remember some of those emails from way back when...

Anyway, good luck with the job search, and you owe me an email! If there's anything I can do...

Phil! I just found out that the law school's self0described "webmonkey" is leaving. There should be some information at the Emory webpage; I just haven't been able to track it down yet.
