It used to be that people would just misuse it for "figuratively," or instead of "really," but I've come to known people who use it needlessly.
"Man, I picked up smokes at the gas station and it literally took me five minutes." "Yeah, I believe you, you don't have to qualify the statement. Five minutes sounds about right."
