Robert Fripp apparently has to beg for entrance into the venues where he's playing.

My friend Bo and I went to see Robert Fripp's solo show at the Variety Playhouse this evening. We got there quite early to ensure good seats and struck up conversations with the people around us, discussing ambient music, electronic music, progressive music, all kinds of music. About two minutes after we arrived, we turned round as we heard some thumping on the door and a familiar British voice raised in a mock plea: "Let me in! Let me in!"

It was Robert, who had apparently strolled up to the front door of the venue when the back one wasn't answered. We all burst out laughing and somebody said, "Yeah, you'd think they would let YOU in at least." They did, a few seconds later, but we all got a good snicker out of it.

He puts on a very enjoyable show. Forty minutes or so of improv ambient electronic music, followed by about twenty minutes of Q & A with fans (he's got a very sardonic, dry sense of humor -- much different from the caustic personality he can frequently exhibit on his website and in his journal entries), and then another forty minutes or so of improv Frippertronics. I think the local reviewer whose review he quoted during the Q & A was correct (and so did he, actually) -- you probably wouldn't have gotten much out of the show unless you were already a fan or were a big fan of improv or ambient music. Fortunately, all of us in the audience were.

Well, almost all of us. I heard one guy complaining after the show was over: "Two songs? That's it? What a rip-off."

We just shook our heads and tried to keep Bo from ripping the guy's throat out for being stupid. You would think that before attending a show and paying $25 for it (more for many, with Tickethassler fees) you would at least find out SOMEthing about the kind of music you were going to be hearing.
