Feb. 14th, 2006

I tend to think of February 14th as "Lovers' Day" rather than a day devoted to a saint whose origin most people couldn't even tell you if you quizzed them on it.

I see today as a day for lovers, those who've found a connection with somebody they care about very much. To those of you who have such a someone today: cherish it. Tell them how much they mean to you. You can never say "I love you" too many times. Don't worry so much about the flowers-and-candy side of things; those things are better saved for days when your partner ISN'T expecting it. Instead, make sure they know how much they mean to you. Life's short. Enjoy what you have.

I also see today as a day for remembering past lovers. For those who are single today (like myself), the day often has a bittersweet flavor. The overcommercialization of the holiday does its best to try and make people feel like they're losers for not having someone. Pretty fucking ridiculous. It simply means you just aren't coupled with someone at the moment -- has nothing to do with your desirability or lack thereof. I choose to use today for remembering past loves and silently wishing them well, wherever they are right now and whatever they're doing -- or whoever they're with.

I also like to use today for looking towards the future. I mentioned that life's short and you never know what's coming. You don't know whether tomorrow you'll meet somebody who's perfect for you, and vice versa. Gabriel Garcia Marquez wrote about that phenomenon in One Hundred Years of Solitude. He called it "the thunderbolt": what happens when you meet someone and both of you immediately know that you love them and want to spend the rest of your life together. Does love at first sight exist? Sure.

Am I a cynic, overly sarcastic, overly curmudgeonly? Sure. It's integral to my character. But, as I have demonstrated a whole bunch of times, I've also got a soft, squishy romantic interior. So today, tell somebody you love them -- your partner if you have one, a friend or family member if you haven't got a partner just at the moment -- and see how much it means to them. Like I said, you can never hear those three words too many times.

Me? My thoughts are with a particular young lady in Texas today. Am I insane for thinking about another possible long-distance relationship after the last one turned out so badly? Maybe. But like I said -- life's too short. Seize what you can while you can. She's a very special person and she means a lot to me already. I don't have a clue where things are going; all I can do is hope they continue to go well.

iTunes seems to be in the spirit of things, too. The last three random songs it's picked have had "love" in the title. Honest to God. I wonder how many songs I own that have it in the title? Let's see....holy crap. 348 songs. Guess that tells you how much love means to musicians. :)

Happy Lovers' Day, everyone.
