How to get on my bad side immediately:

-- Contact me with a tech support issue. When I tell you the problem is because you're trying to use the system in a way that it wasn't designed to support, respond, "But it's always worked this way before!"

Your car is also CAPABLE of driving with its handbrake on, but it's not going to work properly if you do! IT'S NOT DESIGNED TO WORK THAT WAY. SHUT UP AND USE THE SYSTEM THE WAY IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE USED.

I love that analogy for the purpose, I'll have to remember that one.

Good luck. Some people even ignore that (as [livejournal.com profile] marared mentioned). Usually, it at least gets them to shut up temporarily while they reconsider their position.

Currently I'm dealing with a business that not only is NOT using the system the way it's supposed to be, but they also have an additional issue. I had to extend the metaphor further for them: "Imagine your car with its handbrake on ALSO has a fuel injector problem. To troubleshoot the fuel injector issue, I first have to get you to stop using the handbrake." Gah.

cheers,
Phil

Oh wow...I am also going to totally steal that analogy. Very useful for support.

They don't care. It's much like that conversation I've had about using your neighbor's unsecured wifi without permission vs stealing an unlocked car. "BUT IT'S NOT THE SAME THING!"

They may not CARE, but it at least gets them to shut up temporarily while they rethink their position. At least, it usually does. Some people are just never happy. But then, you knew that. :)

cheers,
Phil
