Grocery shopping yesterday, I strolled up to the checkout and started putting my few purchases on the conveyor. The clerk looked at the T-shirt I was wearing (Peter Gabriel tour shirt from 2003) and, apparently puzzled, inquired, "Who's Peter Gabriel?"

I swear, I felt my spine bend a few inches and another few white hairs appear in my goatee. Am I really that old?

I tried telling him -- former frontman for Genesis before going solo; had hits with "Shock the Monkey", "Sledgehammer", "Red Rain", "Solsbury Hill"; wrote music for "The Last Temptation of Christ"; hell, he even had an original song appear recently on the soundtrack for "WALL-E". He just looked more puzzled. "So, like, is he based here in Austin?" I just shook my head. "No, he's British. Based in the U.K.," I said. "Ohhhhhhhhh," he said, obviously still wondering why I should have this guy on a T-shirt. I wandered off, shaking my head some more. And checked my reflection in the mirror when I got home to make sure I hadn't spontaneously aged another ten years.

So, for those few who might NOT know who Peter Gabriel is, I'm sharing one of my favorite albums today. This is from Gabriel's "Secret World Live" tour back in 1994. It is still one of the best live performances I have ever seen (the DVD is magnificent) and the energy and passion he puts into all of his music shines through. A truly exceptional performance, with an AMAZING setlist:

Come Talk To Me
Across The River
Slow Marimbas
Shaking the Tree
Red Rain
Blood of Eden
Kiss That Frog
Washing of the Water
Solsbury Hill [[this rendition of an old favorite still gives me goosebumps]]
Digging in the Dirt
Secret World [[see above re: goosebumps]]
Don't Give Up
In Your Eyes [[goosebumps, Part III]]

Not only that, but Gabriel gathered some incredible musicians around him for this performance: longtime collaborators David Rhodes on guitar and Tony Levin on bass, Jean-Claude Naimro on keyboards, Shankar on violin, Manu Katche on drums, Paula Cole on vocals. The final tune even features Papa Wemba and his band contributing.

It's a hell of a show. Check it out. File is 115 MB in size, .ZIP file containing the songs in .M4A iTunes format; also playable with Winamp or Windows Media Player. This particular one isn't hosted on my webspace because it's a bit too large for my quota but the Filefactory download should work fine; just click on "Download with FileFactory Basic".
